Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park
Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay on Long Island’s North Shore is the former country home of William Robertson Coe and his wife, Mai, a Standard Oil heiress. Mr. Coe purchased Planting Fields in 1913 and developed it into a 409-acre estate, employing leading architects Walker & Gillette, and landscape designers including James Greenleaf, Lowell & Sargent, and the Olmsted Brothers. In 1949, he deeded Planting Fields to the State of New York. Since 1971 Planting Fields has been part of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. In 1979, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Districts and became the State’s first historic park in 1993.

Gardens, woodlands, natural areas, greenhouses, and special plant collections (azalea, camellia, conifers, heather, beech, holly, magnolia, maple, and rhododendron) attract more than 180,000 visitors annually to experience the beauty and learn through a variety of educational programs for adults and families.
